1a. Introduction (English)

Every day we use many machines to make our work easier. Some machines, such as cars, tractors and factory machines, are very complicated. But many complicated machines are built using a few very simple ideas. These are called Simple Machines.

Look around your home, school and village and you will find simple machines everywhere. A hand pump uses a lever. A well may use a pulley to lift a bucket of water. A bicycle uses gears. A ramp helps us move a heavy object to a higher place. Screws hold together doors, furniture, bicycles and machines.

Simple machines are important because they allow us to use force and movement in more useful ways.

For example:

  • A lever can help us lift a heavy object using a smaller force.
  • A pulley can change the direction in which we apply force. Some pulley systems can also reduce the force needed to lift a heavy object.
  • Gears can give us more turning force by reducing speed, or more speed by reducing turning force.
  • An inclined plane or ramp allows us to move something to a greater height using less force, but we have to move it over a longer distance.
  • A screw changes turning movement into forward movement and can produce a large force.
  • A rack and pinion can change circular movement into straight-line movement.

There is an important idea hidden behind all these machines.

Simple machines do not create energy for free. They give us an advantage by changing something.

We may use less force, but have to move through a greater distance. We may get more turning force, but lose speed. Or we may simply change the direction or type of movement so that a job becomes easier to do.

In this project, you are not going to learn about simple machines only by reading about them.

You are going to see them, build them, experiment with them, measure them and use them.

You will:

  • Learn how simple machines work.
  • Find examples of simple machines in everyday life.
  • Build levers, pulleys and gears yourselves.
  • Conduct experiments and collect your own data.
  • Enter your measurements into Excel and create graphs.
  • Use art to show simple machines in the world around you.
  • Write stories exploring the idea of leverage in our lives.
  • Finally, combine different simple machines to build your own Rube Goldberg machine.

By the end of this project, we hope that you will start looking differently at ordinary things around you.

The next time you see a bicycle, a hand pump, a door, a pulley, a ramp or even a screw, ask yourself:

How does this work?

What force or movement is being changed?

What advantage are we getting — and what are we giving up to get that advantage?

1b. Introduction (Kannada)
